Pyrolysis oil is used as a fuel in burners for heating in all industries. It has a high calorific value of 10,500. And hence, It is a direct substitute to fuels like diesel, LDO, Furnace oils in industrial applications.

The process

Pyrolysis is thermochemical decomposition at elevated temperatures in the absence of oxygen (or any halogen). It involves the simultaneous change of chemical composition and physical phase, and is irreversible. The word is coined from the Greek-derived elements pyro "fire" and lysis "separating".

Bureau of Indian Standards has issued ‘GUIDELINES FOR RECYCLING OF PLASTICS’ (Indian Standard IS 14534 : 1998). Its clause 5.1.3 says, Tertiary Recycling involves the production of basic chemicals and fuels from plastics waste/scrap as part of the municipal waste stream or as a segregated waste. Pyrolysis and hydrolysis are examples of these processes.
